Completion List 2019: Doom #20

doom

Listen, I like to unload into someone face as much as the next guy. Possibly a little more than the next guy in fact. I was still unsure that I could unload over and over again without feeling drained though and didn’t think I’d go all the way with this one.

Somehow Doom kept me playing and I can’t really explain why. It just felt good. I can’t fault the environments; the mix of sci-fi setting and gothic was great. As was the level design. There was room to explore, secrets too find and I never got frustrated by getting too lost. Audio was terrific, with creepy noises, loud roars, explosions and satisfying gunshots. Gameplay was fast, frantic and exhilarating.

Despite that, and because it’s happened before in other games, I still assumed it would stagnate for me a few hours in….. and it just didn’t. I don’t know if I’ve ever gone into a game with such skepticism, to then be confronted by those issues I was concerned about, only to give zero shits and keep on playing.

Doom is pretty shallow, pretty repetitive and pretty fucking awesome. Well played, GG.
